How To Reverse And Park A Caravan

If you are new to the world of caravanning and the thought of reversing one terrifies you, don’t let it put a stop to your caravan holidays. With a bit of practice and a lot of patience, you will be a caravan reversing pro in no time.

The first thing you need to do is ensure that you have proper towing mirrors fitted to your car. Not only do you need these for driving forwards, they are imperative when you are reversing as they allow you to see right down the sides of the caravan. Once these are in place, you’re good to go.

Drive past the site that you plan to park your caravan on, making sure it is on your right side. This allows you to watch the van as you reverse in, making sure that there are no obstacles in your way.

When it actually comes to reversing your caravan, the rule of thumb is that the steering is opposite to how you would normally reverse your car. So, if you want your van to veer to the left, turn the steering wheel to the right, and vice versa. The key is to go slowly as caravans are known to drift slightly and this allows you plenty of time for slight corrections as they’re needed.

If, for some reason, you need to make a more significant correction to the angle of your caravan never continue reversing and try to correct your steering. Over-steering and reversing too fast can lead to your caravan jackknifing. The best course of action is to pull forwards at least one car length to straighten up your steering and begin again.

These are just some of the basic guidelines to follow when it comes to reversing a caravan. The best way to learn is to get out into an empty car park before your first caravanning holiday and practice with a guide to help you.
